Fiona Benson led this walking workshop, exploring the remains of Plymouth’s Elizabethan architecture – buildings and streets the protagonists in the Page of Plymouth story may well have known. We explored Page of Plymouth through an Elizabethan lens, taking in The Merchants House, Elizabethan House, with creative writing prompts and inspiration for our own writing along the way. Thanks to The Box, we were granted special access to Elizabethan House for part of this workshop, helping us to imagine what life might have been like in the Page household.
The Barbican Theatre provided us with another welcome shelter on this stormy February day. Here, on the final stop of the walk, we considered the strange portent mentioned in the version of the story told in the 1591 pamphlet: the raven seen to hang itself from the mast of a ship in the harbour. We also looked at the names of Elizabethan ships and who named them.
