A young woman from Tavistock who fell in love with George Strangwidge, a young man her parents initially favoured. They changed their minds and instead matched her with William Page, a much wealthier, older man living in Plymouth. She married Master Page on the advice of “friends,” but against her will. She didn’t love him, and tried several times to poison him, before plotting with George to be rid of him. She offered Robert Priddis, a servant in the household, money to kill her husband. She was tried for her part in the murder and executed at Barnstaple. The Ballads are more sympathetic towards Eulalia. She admits her guilt and asks God’s mercy, but points to her father’s greed in forcing her to marry wealthy Master Page against her will.
Her burial is recorded in the Bishop’s Tawton parish register, 20 March 1590/91, held by South West Heritage Trust. Also recorded in the Barnstaple Parish Register (burials), held at North Devon Records Office. The Lost Chronicle of Barnstaple, published by The Devon Association, records that the town clerk noted 18 prisoners condemned and executed, one of them “Mrs Paige.”
